The wilderness that encompasses Silver Gate, Montana offers visitors the opportunity for vast recreation. During the summer months, outdoor enthusiasts may enjoy fishing, hiking, or camping in one of the various National Forests or Yellowstone National Park. In the winter months, the high elevation brings tons of snow, creating ideal snowshoeing, cross-country skiing and snowmobiling conditions.

Summer

Fishing
With crystal clear mountain lakes and blue ribbon trout streams, Silver Gate offers some of the most pristine wild trout fishing in North America. Local areas to lure and fly fish include Beartooth Lake, Soda Butte Creek, and the Lamar River. Don’t forget to look around, there might be a grizzly fishing too!

Walking and Hiking
The wilderness around Silver Gate offers several walking and hiking trails. The Bannock Trail is located near town and was once used by the Bannock Indians to reach buffalo hunting grounds. Another trail in the area follows Silver Creek to the base of Silver Creek Falls, a cascading 100 foot waterfall. Both trails are relatively level terrain and offer breathtaking views of the surrounding wilderness. Visitors may also wish to day hike in the park; trails here often lead to unique natural features, such as Petrified Forest.

Camping
Looking to sleep under the open sky? The area around Silver Gate offers several camping opportunities. Located just outside Cooke City, the Soda Butte Campground can be accessed via Highway 212. Pebble Creek Campground, further down the road, is located inside the Northeast Entrance of Yellowstone Park.

Wildlife Viewing
Located just minutes from Yellowstone National Park, Silver Gate is a great place to watch for wildlife. With it’s close proximity to the Lamar Valley, this area is teeming with critters, including bison, wolves, elk, coyotes, and grizzly bears. Don’t forget to bring the camera!

Scenic Drives
Enjoy beautiful vistas and natural wonders along one of the many scenic drives around Silver Gate. The Beartooth Highway, Chief Joseph Scenic Byway, and Yellowstone Park allow visitors to explore the amazing landscape by car or motorcycle.

Winter

Snowshoeing and Cross-Country Skiing
With its vast amount of wilderness, Silver Gate is a skier and snowshoer’s paradise. Just past Cooke City, the trail to Kersey Lake and Rock Island Lake offers beautiful views of the Beartooth Mountains while giving visitors a gentle backcountry experience.

Snowmobiling
The Silver Gate area is known for its world renowned snowmobiling. Sledders of all skill level will love the deep snow, amazing scenery, and numerous trails.
