For over seventy years, Billings, Montana, has been the artistic performance center of the state, all focused on its well-loved Alberta Blair Theater, formerly known as the Fox Theater. It hosts events throughout the year, numbering over one hundred, ranging from music to dance.
The theater began its life in 1931, opening with a major film, street dancing and a parade. The theater is characterized by a lavish stage, art deco interiors and classical chandeliers. In fact, it was the final theater of its kind to be constructed by 20th Century Fox. The company called it the Fox Theater for obvious reasons, but its name was changed in honour of the theater's renovator, Alberta Bair, in 1987, whose family had owned a homestead on the very spot on which the theater stood.
Today the Alberta Bair Theater hosts a variety of performances, ranging from local groups to internationally renowned events. Visitors can take a tour of its museum and enjoy evening performances that include chamber music, other musical concerts, drama, plays, musicals, jazz, comedies, Broadway shows, ballet and other dancing performances and opera. Tickets vary depending on the seats and shows booked, but are available online, in person and via phone.
