Choosing a river guide

There are many rafting companies to choose from. Although river guides are not required to be licensed in Montana, most are reliable and experienced. It is ok to be cautious when choosing a guide. Guides with proven track records are your safest choice. Ask a lot of questions and ask for references. Inform your guide if the float trip is suitable for elderly or children under 10 years old.

All guides provide life jackets. Some provide wetsuits or splash gear. Scenic trips do not usually involve getting very wet, although expect occasional waves to wash over the boat. Many guiding companies offer lunch. You might want to check with your guide before you step aboard.

Float trips provide the opportunity to leisurely learn about the history, geology, flora, and fauna of the area. Guides are good resources of information and are usually full of fascinating local stories, legends, and jokes. Tap into their knowledge and ask about anything you find curious.

Rating rapids

If you choose to bring your own raft or canoe and plan to enjoy a scenic float trip, make sure you know how to read the rapid ratings.

  • Class I entails relaxed floating.
  • Class II means there are gentle waves.
  • Class III provides intermediate rapids and a few high-splash waves.
  • Class IV means there are serious waves and hydraulic knowledge is necessary.
  • Class V requires expert ability only.
  • Class VI means the river is unrunnable.

For scenic trips, stick to Class I-II. Keep in mind that river conditions change over the course of the year. Investigate the river and its runs. Do not assume that the Stillwater is tame just because of its name.
