The most popular biking route in Red Lodge is the Beartooth Scenic Highway. Stretching 65 miles from Red Lodge to Cooke City, the Beartooth Highway, US 212, takes you through mountain plateaus and forested hillsides. You'll climb to 11,000 feet and feel as if you are on the top of the world. Many bikers refer to it as the most exciting ride of their lives. Keep your eyes peeled for wildlife such as elk, moose, deer, and black bears. When planning to ride the Beartooth Highway, allow yourself a lot of time. You'll want to absorb a the natural beauty that this route provides access to. Average biking trips take about 3 hours.
Many motorcycle tour companies offer tours that take you through the entire Yellowstone area. You'll ride through Grand Teton National Park, Yellowstone National Park, Custer National Park, and over the Beartooth Highway. A tour such as this lasts about a week and are offered only in the summer when all roads are open and free of snow. Tour companies provide bikes, helmets, tour guides, food, and lodging. Many of the tours fill-up quickly, so make your reservations early.
If you find yourself on a motorcycle in Red Lodge in mid-July, you won't want to miss the Beartooth Rally and Iron Horse Rodeo. Events include: the Window Pane Golf Tournament, Highway 212 Poker Run, and the Iron Horse Rodeo. The 18-hole golf tournament is held at the Red Lodge Country Club Estates. The Poker Run rides up the Beartooth Pass to Cooke City, and then loops back to Red Lodge, via the Chief Joseph Scenic Highway. The ride lasts all day and covers 120 miles roundtrip. The ride offers over $2,000 in prizes. The Iron Horse Rodeo features such events as a slow race, potato race, barrel racing, keg rolling, and an obstacle course. There are over $1,000 in prizes offered at the rodeo. Other events throughout the weekend include live music, oil and cream wrestling, street dancing, and a wet t-shirt contest. There will also be appearances by the lovely Beartooth Biker Babes.
