Silver Gate
Silver Gate, Montana is located just outside the northeast entrance to Yellowstone National Park. Although founded primarily to serve tourists, with less than 100 year-round residents, Silver Gate is hardly a tourist town. One of the last outposts, Silver Gate retains its pioneer charm with authentic log cabins nestled at the base of the Beartooth Mountains. more info
The town of Silver Gate was originally part of land homesteaded by Horace S. Double in 1897. It wasn't until 1932 when John J. Taylor and J.J. White founded the actual town of Silver Gate. Taylor and White wanted to start a western town that catered to tourists and served as a site for summer recreationists to begin their adventures. To retain Silver Gate's rustic feel, the town was created with restrictions on architecture, which included standards on setbacks and signs. New buildings are required to be built with log construction.
The elevation of Silver Gate is 7,400 feet, and it is surrounded by peaks that rise to over 10,000 feet. Silver Gate is tucked in the middle of the Lamar Valley of Yellowstone, the Beartooth Mountains of Montana, and the Sunlight Basin and Absaroka range of Wyoming. Silver Gate is also located just a few miles from Cooke City, one of the gateways to the Beartooth Scenic Highway, considered one of the most beautiful drives in North America. Surrounded by so much natural beauty, Silver Gate makes a lasting impression in the hearts of all its visitors.
With excellent proximity to several natural wonders of Montana and Wyoming, Silver Gate makes an excellent place to begin any outdoor adventure. Wildlife viewing is popular and rewarding. Moose, elk, and deer are seen in abundance. Occasionally, you will come across a black bear or even a grizzly. If you are looking for wolves, one of your best chances of spotting one, is to drive into the nearby Lamar Valley in Yellowstone. Other outdoor activities include hiking, camping, fishing, hunting, and horseback riding.
Although there are not a lot of shops in Silver Gate, there are several opportunities to spend the night in a rustic log cabin during the summer season. If you are traveling with children, you might want to stop at the Silver Gate Park. With a seesaw, swing set, and monkey bars, the whole family will get a chance to stretch and play after spending long hours in the car.
