Cooke City Fish Fry & Big Fish Tournament
The very first Cooke City Fish Fry & Big Fish Tournaments date back to the 1920's. In 1934 it was estimated that about 2,000 people attended the tournament annually. It became a tradition for those in the whole region and a chance for family and friends to visit together one last time before the snowy winters isolated the residents of Cooke City. Visitors often traveled along the one lane road in Yellowstone National Park to join in on the fun.
The historic fish fry and contest days were full of boxing, horse shoe, horse races, and much gambling. The event is held during the first weekend of August and today filled with activities like a big fish contest, a historical skit, a marshmallow roast, the traditional Fish Fry dinner, live music, and great dancing. All money raise by the Cooke City Fish Fry and Big Fish Tournament go to Cooke City, Cooke Pass and Silver Gate Chamber of Commerce to improve their museum and visitor center. From Red Lodge, Montana drive south and then west on Highway 212 to enjoy this fun filled event.
It looks like you may have missed it this time around.
