Each August, Cooke City holds it’s old-fashioned Fish Fry and Big Fish Contest, with live entertainment, dancing, a marshmallow roast and a big Fish Fry dinner.

Overview: The Cooke City Fish Fry and Big Fish Contest has been around for nearly a century, and today it is still filled with tradition. Visitors from all-over gather to participate in the traditional Fish Fry supper, Big Fish Contest, marshmallow roasting, live music, dancing, a historical skit, and many more exciting activities. All money raised at this event goes to the Cooke City, Cooke Pass and Silver Gate Chamber of Commerce to support the local museum and visitor center.

When: The Cooke City Fish Fry and Big Fish Contest occurs in early August.

Where: Cooke City is located south of Red Lodge, near Yellowstone National Park. To get there, head south on Highway 212.

Fee: The fees at this event vary. All money raised benefits the Cooke City and Silver Gate Chambers of Commerce.

Details: The first Fish Fry and Big Fish Contest took place in the 1920’s, when Cooke City locals would gather one last time before the isolating snow storms hit. By the tenth year of the event, thousands of people where drawn to Cooke City for the exciting festivities. During those days, activities of the event included boxing, horse races, gambling, and horse shoes. Although some of the activities have changed, the traditional feel remains the same.
