Cooke City Activities
Cooke City, Montana is located within one of the most remote and pristine mountain ranges within the country. It sits four miles from the northeast entrance to Yellowstone National Park. These four miles encompass Lamar Valley which is home to the curious Yellowstone wolves. It is also the western gateway to the Beartooth Range, and the famous Beartooth Pass known to many as "the most scenic drive in America." This range was named after a peak resembling a bear's tooth. Along this pass Granite Peak towers at almost 13,000 feet just to the west of the highway. It is said that Granite Peak is made of some of the oldest rock on the planet.

Depending on when you visit this quaint town you will find endless ways to entertain yourself and keep busy in the out of doors. In the summers the main attraction for visitors is the drive over the Beartooth's as well as Yellowstone National Park. Many breeze through Cooke City on their way to other destinations and few actually experience the treasure hidden within and around the small town itself. As an outdoor recreation center, Cooke City has been tourist services like gas stations, stores, cafes, hotels, galleries, and guiding services. Summer invites travelers to hike, climb, bike, bird watch, fish some of the most renowned trout waters and hunt big game.
A few different guest ranches in the area guide horseback riding, pack trips, fishing, sightseeing and bird watching in the summers and snowmobiling, snowshoeing, ice fishing, and cross-country skiing in the winters. Backcountry yurts that can be accessed in the summer by hikers and mountain bikers and in the winter by skiers, snowboarders and snowshoers.
The winter is a magical time to visit Cooke City, Montana. Everything is covered with a soft white blanket and visitors are drawn to the areas serenity and tranquility. Cooke City receives an average annual snowfall of 500 inches. It is possible to rent snowmobiles from a couple different locations in town and ride through miles of national forest land. The winters are a great time to see plenty of elk, moose and deer.
Cooke City's locals know how to have fun. They invite visitors to join in on the following events throughout the summer: the Sweet Corn Festival in Mid-April; the Beartooth Harley Poker Run in mid-July; the Beartooth Environmental Awareness Day toward the end of July; the Old Fashion Fish Fry and Big Fish Contest during the first week of August; Shakespeare in the Parks and the Women's Biker Rally in late August; a Horseshoe Tournament in early September.
