The best times to visit the Northern Rockies and Yellowstone National Park are summer, autumn, and winter. The days are sunny, the nights are clear and the humidity is low. Spring for this area can be chilly, spitting snow or rain. From mid-June on you can hike, fish, camp and watch wildlife, and if you visit before July 4, or after Labor Day, you will find less crowds. Autumn is not just the time when the aspen turn gold, but also the time when gateway motels and restaurants rates are lower, and roads are less crowded. Winter is a glorious season here, though not for everyone. It can be very cold, but the air is crystalline, the snow is powdery, and the skiing is fantastic.

There are 370 miles of paved roadway in Yellowstone National Park, with a figure-eight loop at the center that takes you to some key attractions. You can cover that ground in one long day, but that is not the best way to experience the park. Try to make your trip a minimum of 3 days. Make your way to the famous sites regardless of the crowds, because they are deserving of all the attention: Old Faithful, the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone, Fishing Bridge, and Mt. Washburn. And for those of you who are overwhelmed with the large volume of visitors, just take a walk off the beaten path because there is plenty of virtually undisturbed, wild country here. If you want a wilderness experience with privacy, abundant wildlife, hot springs, trout streams, and thrilling scenery, Yellowstone is in fact a wonderful choice.

There are five major visitor and information centers in the park, and each has something different to offer. Unless otherwise indicated, summer hours are 8am to 7pm. The Albright Visitor Center at Mammoth Hot Springs, is the largest. It provides visitor information and publications about the park, exhibits depicting park history from pre-history through the creation of the National Park Service, and houses a wildlife display on the second floor. The Old Faithful Visitor Center is another large facility. Rangers dispense various park publications and post projected geyser eruption times here. Information regarding seismic activity in the area are also featured in an exhibit at Old Faithful Center. Canyon Visitor Center, in Canyon Village, is the place to go for books and information on the park's wildlife, especially the bison. Fishing Bridge Visitor Center, near Fishing Bridge on the north shore of Yellowstone Lake, has an excellent wildlife display as well. The Grant Village Visitor Center has information, publications, a slide program, and a fascinating exhibit that examines the effects of fire in Yellowstone.

Lodging in Yellowstone National Park ranges from rustic cabins to the elegant rooms at Lake Yellowstone Hotel, from RV park sites to tent camping. Overnighting in Yellowstone is a must, but keep in mind that a planned out schedule is very helpful and lodging requires advance reservations that should be made at least 3-6 months in advance.

The first, best step you can take in planning a trip to the parks is to carefully examine a park map. You will want to be acquainted with the locations of the park attractions you want to see and their accommodations possibilites. Review any excursions you might want to make outside the park, too. You might want to stay near the appropriate entrance, or even get a room in one of the gateway towns.

Xanterra Parks & Resorts, Yellowstone's reservations agency, can offer information into activities in and around the park, lodging and dining possibilities, and specific information regarding amentities such as an ATM machine, gas stations, laundry facilities, weather updates, and much more. The park rangers offer a wealth of information, and are open to any questions that you may have. Taking a tour with a tour operator is probably the most comprehensive way of obtaining information on the vast and magical land. Yellowstone National Park is an amazing landmass of natural wonder.
